Astronomy Day

On April 28, Astronomy Day, we enjoyed an interesting presentation by Sarah Mattson and Bradford Castalia from the Hi-RISE program at the U of A. We learned how to use the HiView software to explore images of Mars. We also found out that ordinary citizens who are not scientists can suggest areas of Mars to be photographed in high resolution using the HiWish public suggestion form. Great fun!

The kids made space crafts (pardon the pun) with the help of volunteers Karen and Karyme Young and Elizabeth Jackson.

Afterward, Paul Weiss from Oracle set up telescopes in the parking lot and we had great views of the moon, Venus, and Mars. One participant even took fantastic photos of the moon as seen through the telescope lens using her cell phone!
